Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Admiral Naveed Ashraf, visited Thailand to attend the eighth Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Conclave of Chiefs in Bangkok. The event included panel discussions on issues related to cooperation in maritime security in the Indian Ocean and the blue economy, outlining ways forward for the sustainable development of IONS member states.
During the IONS Conclave of Chiefs, bilateral meetings took place between the Chief of the Naval Staff and naval leadership of IONS member states. The CNS held discussions with the Commander of Qatar Emiri Naval Forces, the C-in-C of the Royal Thai Navy, the Deputy C-in-C of the Russian Navy, the Commander of the Royal Navy of Oman, the CNS of the French Navy, the Commander of the Iranian Navy, the Fleet Commander of the Royal Navy (UK), and the Vice Chief of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The discussions covered matters of mutual interest.
Admiral Naveed Ashraf focused on the Pakistan Navy's contributions to regional maritime security and emphasized collaboration between regional navies to enhance maritime security in the area. He also stressed the need for greater collaboration among Indian Ocean countries to exploit the potential of the blue economy.
The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) is an initiative aimed at formalizing a regional maritime collaborative forum. Pakistan officially became a member of IONS in 2014. The Pakistan Navy actively engages in IONS, viewing it as a platform that facilitates participating nations in working together for regional peace and maritime security through a collaborative approach.
